Chester Weber – Poetry in Motion in Four-in-Hand Driving

“What inspires me anew every day is the pursuit of excellence.”

With these words, Chester Weber describes his approach to combined driving. the 20-time national four-in-hand champion of the U.S. Equestrian Federation has been one of the sport’s most influential figures on the international stage for years.

Growing Up Around Horses – A Dream Takes Shape

Weber grew up at his mother’s racing stable and was surrounded by horses from an early age. His first dream: to become a jockey. But it soon became clear that he would never have the height required for that path.

An unexpected twist ultimately brought the decisive change: when Weber’s father was gifted a Clydesdale, father and son first tried—unsuccessfully—to connect with the horse under saddle. Switching to driving, however, opened up an entirely new world.

What began as shared carriage rides quickly developed into a deep passion. Before long, Chester Weber took on the role of commander while his father made notes—a morning routine that built not only experience, but also structure. The foundation for an extraordinary career was laid.

From Young Talent to World-Class Competitor

With the support of his parents, the next steps came quickly: his own driving horses, first competitions, and international ambitions.

Weber’s attention to detail and strong competitive drive paid off. In 2008, he made history as the first American to win an individual silver medal at the Four-in-Hand Driving World Championships.

More milestones followed:

  • Team gold and individual silver at the FEI World Equestrian Games
  • Two consecutive wins at the prestigious Royal Windsor Horse Show (2014 & 2015)
  • FEI World Number One Four-in-Hand Driver in 2014

Teamwork as the Key to Success

Behind Chester Weber’s success is a well-coordinated team. Daily stable life follows clear structures, is built on communication, and considers the individual needs of each horse.

“I want every horse to feel safe and confident in its environment,” Weber explains.

Whether in international competition or daily training, each horse’s personality is central. Trust, calmness, and mutual support are essential.

“We are a team: two people on the carriage, four horses—and me. Everything has to work together in harmony to achieve excellence.”

Live Oak International – Driving Meets Show Jumping

Beyond four-in-hand driving, Weber also shapes equestrian sport in another way. Together with his niece, successful show jumper Chloe Reid, he organizes Live Oak International in Ocala, Florida.

What began as a combined driving event has grown into an internationally renowned show featuring jumping classes and even a leg of the FEI Jumping World Cup. The event brings athletes from around the world together while also strengthening the local equestrian community.

Individual Training and Horse Welfare in Focus

Despite the highest performance demands, Weber gives his horses room to develop. Each animal receives an individually tailored training and lifestyle plan—from feeding and exercise to mental balance.

“Twenty-three hours a day are yours. Give me one hour of your best—and I’ll give you the best life possible in return.”

This approach pays off—not only in his own achievements, but also in developing young talent.

Passing on Knowledge – With Passion and Patience

Young Italian driver Gabriele Grasso, who trains with Weber, recalls a defining piece of advice:

“Train the way you compete—with the same passion.”

With patience, clear expectations, and personalized coaching, Chester Weber creates an environment where horses and people can grow together—always with the goal of improving and achieving top performance.
