ā€Fine riding, consistent training, and Olympic gold

Dorothee Schneider is one of the most influential figures in international dressage. Her career stands for consistent training, refined riding, and a deep understanding of horses—from her first rides all the way to Olympic gold.

Childhood and first steps in the saddle

Born on February 17, 1969, in Mainz, Dorothee Schneider grew up in Wiesbaden. She comes from a true horse family: her father, Hans Eberhard Schneider, competed up to advanced level himself, judged up to Grand Prix level, and was a passionate Trakehner breeder.

Until the late 1980s, he managed as tenant the roughly 180-hectare DomƤne Mechthildshausen near Wiesbaden—a place where Dorothee’s equestrian foundations were laid.

Early on, she gained experience in vaulting and often took the top position in freestyle routines. Her first own horse was the small twin mare Gondola II, bred by her father. Wearing red street boots with a zipper, she began a career that would later set international standards.

Training based on ā€œlearning by doingā€

For a long time, her riding education was shaped by her father—without performance pressure or rigid rules. Instead, the guiding principle was ā€œlearning by doing.ā€ Riding lessons were not a given, but something she had to earn.

This approach meant Dorothee learned early to reflect independently, analyze critically, and develop her own style—qualities that still define her riding today.

After finishing school, she first deliberately chose an apprenticeship in banking to gain business know-how for future self-employment. This was followed by:

  • training as an equine specialist (breeding & husbandry)
  • qualification as a master equine specialist
  • the professional rider exam
  • training as an insemination technician, enabling her to run her own breeding station

Dorothee Schneider’s calm, focused manner and consistent self-reflection reveal a strong perfectionism. Early on, she also worked with personality and mental coaches—an approach that was long underestimated in equestrian sport.

Today, Dorothee Schneider runs the training stable and insemination station in Framersheim, where around 60 horses are cared for. Her passion for training—from backing young horses through advanced level and on to Grand Prix remains undiminished and still shapes daily life at her yard.

At the start of his career, First Romance found it difficult to become established at Grand Prix level—less due to physical issues and more because he needed time to mature mentally. He was easily distracted and required time to improve his focus. Since 2022, however, he has made remarkable progress and is now demonstrating his ability in competition.

In 2023, First Romance impressed at major events such as the CDI5* in Fontainebleau, where he finished second twice behind the world champion combination Lottie Fry and Glamourdale. He also stood out at the show in Munich, particularly in the Grand Prix Special.
